An Existentialist Objection to Sukaina Hirji on Oppressive Double Binds

Résumé

In this essay, I argue against Sukaina Hirji's characterization of oppressive double binds in her paper Oppressive Double Binds. I maintain that her argument is unclear and relies on a problematic usage of the term "objective interest" to delineate a distinction between prudential and moral goods. She believes that operating in allignment with one's own subjective interest is impossible for members of oppressed groups no matter which option they choose in these double binds. I believe that this unduly saddles individuals in these choice situations by restricting them to allegiance to a moral good by virtue of their facticity.
